As time goes on it seems as if society is getting more lazy. Many people say that the reason for this laziness is millennials. However this idea has been going back to 1899 in Elbert Hubbard's "A message to Garcia". Elbert Hubbard tells a story about how the president of the United States needs a letter sent to a man named  Garcia. Now this man, Garcia, is stated to be unreachable by telegraph or mail. So, the president asked a man named Rowan to deliver this letter, and without questions Rowan traveled to Garcia and delivered the letter. Hubbard praises Rowan for the determined mind set to get the job done. In my opinion, Hubbard is spot on with society. As I said before, I believe many people are addressing the problem and using the younger people of the country as a scapegoat. But, this problem has been going on for centuries without many people seeing it. No matter where you live there will be people just like Rowan who, when asked to do something, will not ask any questions and just complete the task, but there will also always be lazy people who will come up with a million excuses not do a requested task. The people like Rowan just take the initiative to complete a task. There will be people who you won't even have to ask to complete a task because it will already be done. Those are the people that are leaders at whatever they do.
Hubbard also talks about the incompetence of others. He states that if you are to ask someone to do something for you, they will ask a million questions and procrassinate until you get someone else to do it. Oxford Dictionaries describes incompetence as "the inability to do something successfully". We can very clearly see in this essay that Rowan shows absolutely no incompetence.
This essay inspired me very much to do many things in my freshman year at John Carroll.
One of the many things that I took away from this essay is that being lazy will get you nowhere in life. To be dependable and to always be trusted you must have a determined mind set much like Rowan's while delivering the letter to Garcia. This essay probably inspired many people at the time of the publish date as well since many people were buying copies of this for their office, classroom, etc. The essay continues to inspire people throughout the world which is why schools like MIT and Westpoint University require students to read it.
"A Message to Garcia" especially inspired me to create an action plan that will make sure that I have a fantastic freshmen year at John Carroll. I will start my plan with trying to get at least seven hours of sleep a night. Many high school students are unable to get seven hours of sleep because of extra-curricular activities and homework. When you get enough sleep at night, you wake up refreshed and are ready to start the day. Having a refreshed and ready mind will help you be less lazy and have less of an incompetent mood. Ultimately, being less lazy will allow you to get more work done and strive for greatness everyday. In order to accomplish this I will go to bed by 11:15 every night and wake up at 6:15.
My second point for my action plan is to not depend on free mods to complete homework and study for tests. I believe that completing all your school work the night before and not the day of will allow yourself to not have as many worries on your mind. Not having as many worries on your mind will allow you to be a generally happy person and as referred to above, will help you go to sleep at night. Of course, if I have some down time in my free mod and I have a test in an hour I will look over the materials for a little longer, but I don't want to depend on that free mod to get all of my studying in.
My third point for my action plan is to meet new people. For the past week of school I've been sitting at lunch with a couple of my friends from my old school. I've already startted to make new friends at football practice who I seem to get along with. Going from Kindergarten to 8th Grade with the 9 people who have been with you since Kindergarten (and many new people would come each year) doesn't even compare to having different people in every class of the day. However, I want to use this to my advantage and meet new people everyday. My goal by the need of the year is to meet at least 3 different people in each of my classes.
My fourth point for my action plan is to treat my elective the same as any other class. So far, just by what I've heard, many people don't take their elective as serious as other classes which results in people not reaching their full potential in that class. I can see how it might be a little difficult to compare doodling in a sketchbook to completing quadratic equations, but sometimes this can be the downfall of students. Not taking an elective seriously could be all the difference between an A and a B. So, whenever I step into the Fine Arts Wing for my STEM elective I will treat it as any other class so I can reach my full potential in that class.
My fifth and final point of my action plan is to not be late to ANY classes. In my opinion, if you are to start out the day being late it just might ruin your entire day. Walking up to Mr. Powell's door and seeing the famous "The Late Show Starring Mr. Powell" poster just might get in your head. You don't ever want to start out the day on the wrong foot, and even if it happens you shouldn't let it get in your head. You should always stay positive, no matter what. Getting to school on time, well refreshed from a good night's sleep ,will most likely help you stay positive. So, in order to not be late I am going to arrive at school at 7:30 and give myself as much time as possible in between classes to get my books and get to the next class.
In conclusion, I will use my action plan to guide myself into having a great and productive freshmen year at John Carroll. I will use these points to ensure that I am at well refreshed in the morning, using free mods wisely, meeting new people, treating all classes the same, and getting to school and class on time. I am extremely excited about my productive and successful Freshmen year at John Carroll.

  1. Wow. Just, wow. It certainly appear that you like to write, which is a terrific thing to see. Your well-written analysis of the Hubbard essay dovetails perfectly with your Action Plan. And the plan was very well-thought out. Tremendous start to your year, Frankie! 50/50 on each part, for a total of 100/100.
