Newseum Sub Day

In today's Honor's Human Geography class we have a sub! Her name is Mrs. Ferry and she just happens to be my Spanish teacher. Today I had to read an article about how geographers use site and situation to describe where a place is and what it looks like. Site is physical attributes of an area that help a geographer describe what this place looks like. When different places have a variety of different sites it gives them a character that only they have. As Mr. Schick said before,"no two places in the world are the same". We can see in history that many starting off civilizations really took the different sites of an area into play because they wanted to use those sites to their advantage. One good example of this is Havre De Grace. America built naval bases in Havre De Grace during the Revolutionary War because it was easy to defend the Chesapeake Bay. So, they used the sites of Havre De Grace to their advantage. As we can see, sites are very important when describing regions and choosing the right region for a certain job.
Another thing geographers use to describe where a certain place is is situation. Situation uses other places near the designated place to help you know where it is. For example, if you lived next to Arctic Circle and wanted to know how to get to John Carroll, I would tell you to turn right on to Churchville road and take it all the way down past CVS where you would find the John Carroll School. However, this is not the only thing we can do with situation. A thing called second situation can describe the importance of a location. Situation uses things around a location to help describe how important a location is. For example, if you live near a very busy body of water whre trading ships go through a lot, like the Chesapeake Bay, situation will describe how important your location is.
Site and Situation can be found literally anywhere. They can be found right where I live. I live in a small town called Port Deposet which is right of the Susquehanna River and right off route 95. Port Deposet mainly has two sections, ground level or on top of the mountain. People can live right at sea level, on the mountain going up, or on top of the mountain where the farms are. I live on top of the mountain on a small 13 acre goat farm. So, there are many characteristics that make my home unique, like the Susquehanna River, the not so big mountain, and the small goat farm I live on. These are all forms of sites in my own daily life. An example of situation could be Route 95 which we live right off of. Route 95 is one of the most widely used highways in the country. So, of course, the government is going to make tolls on them, and there happens to be a toll right after you cross the border of Harford County and enter Cecil County. So, this toll makes so much money everyday with people going on road trips and people that have to use it everyday and have EZ Pass. So this is a small example of situation which describes how important the region in which I live is important. After I finished writing this long paper the bell rang and I went to lunch.
